WHAT IT IS:

Dermal fillers, also known as injectable implant, soft tissue fillers, or wrinkle fillers, are medical implants approved by the FDA to help create a smother and/or fuller appearance. Our fillers are made of hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroylapatite.

 

 

Hyaluronic Acid (Juvederm®,Restylane®)

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in your body, such as connective tissues and skin tissue. It is one of the most popular kinds of skin injectable fillers. It can be used to improve the skin’s contour and reduce depressions in the skin due to lines. You can see potentially dramatic improvements for:

  • Cheek depressions
  • Crow’s feet at the corner of your eyes
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Smoker’s lines; vertical lines on the mouth
  • Worry lines that run across your forehead
  • Marionette lines

Calcium hydroxylapatite ( Radiesse®)

This is a biosynthetically produced material, but is found naturally in human bones. It is a mineral-like substance that is used to fill moderate-to-severe creases such as nasolabial folds, and frown lines. It is also used to enhance cheek fullness and other facial contours. It is known to produce a very natural result and does not migrate. The FDA reports that is has a long safety record.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Patients may need more than one injection to get the desirable smoothing/filling effect. A general guideline is that filler is typically injected 1 mL at a time, and then injected every month until they reach the effect the patient is satisfied with. If the patient is satisfied after one injection, it is recommended they return twice a year the first year, then annually after that. Successful results will depend on the health of the skin and amount and type of filler used. A very fine needle or a cannula (blunt tip injectable tool) will be used to inject the filler. Numbing medication will be used prior to the treatment. Ice will be used before and after the treatment to minimize swelling and bruising.

AFTER YOUR TREATMENT:

Immediately following the treatment, there will be redness and swelling. The swelling will be disproportionate and will be worst the following morning, typically lasting 48 to 72 hours. Sometimes the swelling will be visible two weeks following the procedure as well.

It’s also helpful to know that sometimes one side is better treated than the other. This is due to that most of us have asymmetrical faces to start with. Infection is a very rare complication, but always a possibility when the needle goes into the skin.

After your procedure, it’s important to avoid excess touching of the area injected. Keep the area clean and apply ice as needed.
