The average age of menopause is around 52 years old. Estrogen levels have dropped low and testosterone takes center stage. Within the first five years of menopause, you will loose a third of your collagen. Your skin’s elasticity, moister, and glow will decrease. Lines become deeper, pores more visible, eye sockets hollow, age spots show up, and spider veins become more visible. Skin also becomes more vulnerable to damage from sun, smoke, and pollution.
It is important to stay hydrated, get adequate sleep and exercise, and eat a balanced diet low in carbohydrates. Skin care regimens need to include a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, eye serum, and a daily SPF of 15 or greater. Products with hyaluronic acid are very benificial for dry skin. Do not use harsh soaps and lower the temperature of the shower. Combining this with medical aesthetic services can help keep your skin looking youthful.
At Aria Aesthetics and Wellness, we offer several treatments directed to people 55 years old and beyond.
You should be wearing an SPF of 15 or greater every day. PCA Skin® and VI Aesthetics® offer lightweight options that you can wear under your makeup. Apply it to your face, neck, decolletage, and the back of your hands. Don’t forget to wear sunglasses on bright days as well, as this will decrease lines formed by squinting. If you are out in the sun for more than 20 minutes (beach, pool, exercising), you need to wear SPF 50.
Medical Grade Peels:
Medical grade peels are an excellent way to revitalize your complexion.
Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid peels: these peels offer a gentle exfoliation to reveal smoother skin, reduce wrinkles, increase collagen, and decrease sun damage and blotchy skin spots. They can be applied every 30 days.
Micro Needle Treatments:
Also known as collagen induction therapy, micro needle treatments are a minimally-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment designed to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as scars on the face. A device with 36 needles is used to create micro punctures over your face (0.5 mm to 2.5 mm depth). This stimulates your skin to produce more collagen. This treatment can be combined with a glycolic acid peel for more intense effects.
Lattisse®is an FDA-approved topical treatment to grow eye lashes. Lashes become longer, fuller and darker.
Dermal fillers can be used to plump up lips. They can also help decrease fine lines around the lips (smoker lines). More often than not, these lines are the culprit behind lip color bleeding and feathering. Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that binds to water. The gel-like liquid is injected into the lip to create a subtle increase in your lip size.
Dermal fillers can be used to fill in laugh lines, marionette lines, and frown lines. The gel-like liquid is injected into the lines and lifts up the skin. This smooths out the line or creases. Fillers can also be used in the cheeks to restore a more youthful appearance in people who lost facial volume with age. The fillers can be injected in the tear trough area (also known as orbital rim hollows) to reduce discoloration and volume loss and create a more rested look.
Wrinkle modulators are neurotoxins called botulinum toxin type A (BOTOX®, Dysport®, Xeomin®). It is a natural substance made of purified protein that temporarily suspends the muscle movements, which eases and smooths creases in your face.
As you age past 55 years, wrinkles become more obvious and if you have not had wrinkle modulators before, you probably several static lines. These are lines etched in your skin, even when you are not moving the muscle beneath the skin. It’s worth noting that studies showed a higher efficacy of wrinkle modulators in people less than 65 years old. So while you will see wrinkle correction, it may not be as effective as compared to people who are in their 40’s and 50’s. When you are older than 55 years, a combination therapy of wrinkle modulators, dermal fillers, and collagen building treatments (laser rejuvenation or micro needling) is needed to create a more youthful look.
Laser Hair Removal:
Laser hair removal is permanent hair reduction that can eliminate hair anywhere you normally pluck, tweeze, wax or shave. The laser emits a beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle, where it is absorbed. Upon absorption, the energy is transformed into heat, which can disable the follicle and prevents new hair growth.
Typically, people experience a 85 percent reduction in hair in the treated areas. It is not effective at removing red, light blonde or gray hair. It can be done on all skin colors.
Laser Rejuvenation Therapy:
Laser rejuvenation therapy offers a non invasive tightening treatment to stimulate healthy collagen and restore your skin’s youthful appearance. It helps firm healthy skin, get rid of any red or brown spots as, well as help fill in wrinkles without any downtime. The laser can be done to the neck and decolletage area as well as the dorsal area of your hands. Typically, 4 to 6 treatments spaced out over a 6-month period deliver remarkable results.
