WHAT IT IS:

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail. This condition may affect toenails or fingernails, but toenail infections are particularly common.

At Aria Aesthetics and Wellness, we offer laser treatments that help treat toenail fungus. We use the LightPod Neo® laser from Aerolase® to induce photothermolysis (short heat impulses) that kills the fungus. Your safety is our primary concern and you can have confidence knowing that all laser treatments are performed by a certified nurse practitioner. We also offer education on how to prevent re-occurrence after treatment.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Make sure you read the pre and post treatment forms and follow the instructions prior to your treatment date. Following these instructions will increase your response to the treatment and decrease your chance of reoccurance.

You will be provided with eye protection to wear during the procedure. A small hand piece or “wand” is placed against your nail and the laser is activated. The hand piece is repositioned and the laser is activated again. The size or the area treated will determine the number of laser activations, or “pulses,” required. There is minimal pain associated with the procedure and at most will feel similar to a rubber band snapping lightly against your skin.

AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE:

Immediately after the treatment you may experience some redness around the treated toenail. This will disappear on its own within 24 to 48 hours. You can return to normal activities. If the treatment is successful, you will see new healthy nail as the nail grows out. Nails grow slowly, so it may take up to 12 months to see an entirely clear nail. Long-term recurrence rates of nail fungus range from approximately 20 to 50 percent, regardless of treatment chosen (oral medications, topical creams, or laser therapy). This is why it is important to follow the pre and post treatment instructions to prevent contamination and reoccurance.
